We had our first team meeting in late November to go through the trip and have some time on the river on pack rafts and to review trip logistics and safety.
We had a great introduction to the Alpaca boats, and did a morning session on basic paddling, self and buddy rescues and throw bags. In the afternoon we ran the mangles and I was impressed how easy the packrafts are to use.
After being rained off a 3-day training trip on the Buller in November, it seemed unlikely that we would have the experience with the Alpaca Packrafts to make it feasible to attempt the challenging Rapids and continuous white water of the Upper Waiau. Plans were drawn for another 2 days in the boats...
